Are Electronic Health Record Systems Safe?

Who do you trust?

The fantastic advances in the field of electronic communication constitute a greater danger to the privacy of the individual

~ Earl Warren

Use of Electronic Health Record Systems:

  • Patient documentation
  • Advocate organizational performance
  • Clinical order entries
  • Billing

Why is this a problem?

An unstructured system with poor design and improper usage could lead to errors causing disclosure of private patient information, a decrease in quality of care, and overall jeopardizing patient safety. This could cause an increase in fraud and data abuse that can lead to serious legal implications. If personal data is breached, patients will begin to feel at risk and that the healthcare system cannot be trusted, causing a disconnect between hospitals and the patient’s ability to feel safe. IT in healthcare aids in the foundation for patient examination, diagnosis, and treatment. Security in social, legal, and organizational frameworks is essential for the foundation of healthcare to be trustworthy and dependable. The electronic healthcare system needs to be responsible for who has access and when, and accountable for any data or confidentiality breach.
